Volunteering is key to the receipt of a Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, but it is important to note that not all volunteer activities are considered equal with regard to this program.

In order to be considered for a Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to volunteering with a view toward helping those in need.

Some examples of volunteering by Terry Fox Scholars:

  • Helping the elderly with chores or visiting them in a care facility;
  • Helping and entertaining physically or mentally handicapped children/adults;
  • Tutoring / Peer mentoring;
  • Providing companionship and support to others;
  • Helping out with family responsibilities;
  • Fundraising, collecting food, clothes, household items, etc. for charity;
  • Providing support and encouragement to patients in hospitals or at care facilities;
  • Helping new Canadians adjust to life in Canada;
  • Participating in school or community service clubs;
  • Counselling / assisting 'at risk' youth.
