Starting a new Terry Fox Run in your community

On average, it takes about 30-40 hours over the course of the summer to organize a Terry Fox Run.

It does not have to be a big event – whether 100 people come out, or just 10, it still leads to progress for cancer research.

Easy to organize!

One of the reasons the Terry Fox Run is so popular is that it is extremely easy to organize. The Terry Fox Foundation supplies everything you need to organize the Run: posters, pledge sheets, participation certificates, and other materials and merchandise.

Costs you nothing!

It costs nothing to organize a Terry Fox Run because we supply you with everything you need. If you want to have a raffle or hand out prizes or snacks, they can be donated by local businesses.

Step by Step Guidebook

Everything you need to know about organizing a Terry Fox Run is in the handbook we give you, in a step by step process.

Extensive media promotion

The media is very supportive of Terry Fox Runs. Our office promotes the Run with the national and provincial media, and we give you tips on how to promote the Run with the local media. Community papers tend to be very cooperative, and since the Terry Fox Run is a very popular community event, the local papers usually help promote the Run by giving it a lot of advance coverage.

What to do:

  1. Register: Get the ball rolling by registering with our office. Click here to start registering your community's Terry Fox Run.
  2. Organizing team: You can organize it on your own, or get some people to help you out. Generally, the larger the town you live in, the better it is to have one or two people help you out.
  3. Pick a Run site: decide where you want to hold the run/walk; a large park is always convenient.
  4. Promote, promote, promote! The more you promote the Run, the more people will come. Contact the community paper, put up posters, talk to friends, and ask the local service organizations to help.  You will meet a lot of interesting people, and you will find a lot of support will be given.
  5. Run Day:  All Terry Fox Runs in communities in Canada are held on the same day. This year, it is Sunday, September 16, 2012. You will need more volunteers on Run day to help register participants, hand out water on the route, sell merchandise, and any other task that comes along.   Volunteers for Run day are easy to find!
  6. Celebrate! You've raised money for cancer research, and have taken one step closer to a world without cancer.
